A series of big trade deals will be clinched during U.S. President Joe Biden’s two-day Vietnam visit scheduled for Sunday and Monday, said Vietnamese Ambassador to the U.S. Nguyen Quoc Dung.

The Vietnam-U.S. relations have developed strongly in green economy, digital economy, and hi-tech sectors, Dung noted.

The ambassador added that Biden’s visit would boost the cooperation between the two countries in these sectors.

In particular, the two sides will clarify priorities in the collaboration in hi-tech, artificial intelligence, and telecoms.

Vietnam and the U.S. will launch initiatives and specific cooperation mechanisms in the semiconductor industry and hi-tech manpower training.

During the U.S. president’s visit to Vietnam, the two sides will sign some memoranda of understanding and agreements to foster the Southeast Asian country’s green economy, digital economy, and high technology.

The two countries had earlier entered into many memoranda of understanding and maintained ties in digital economy, energy, and science-technology.

The U.S. and some other countries have signed the Just Energy Transition Partnership, aiming to mobilize US$15.5 billion to support Vietnam in green energy transition and economic growth.

Ambassador Dung said the visit will continue a tradition whereby all incumbent U.S. presidents have visited Vietnam since the two countries established their relations in 1995.

It is more meaningful as the visit happens as the countries celebrate 10 years of their comprehensive partnership. 

With the comprehensive and deep relations of the two countries, the visit is expected to be a momentum to upgrade their relationship to a new height, Ambassador Dung said.

Vietnam’s welcome of U.S. President Biden will also contribute to the former’s implementation of its diplomatic policy of independence, self-reliance, diversification, multilateralism, and comprehensive and intensive international integration, Dung added.

The positive growth of the Vietnam-U.S. ties reflects and meets the demands of the two countries and is in line with the trends and common benefits of the whole region.

During the visit to Vietnam on Sunday and Monday, President Biden will hold talks with Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and other high-ranking leaders.

The two sides will review their comprehensive partnership and work out plans for their partnership in the coming time in science, technology, trade, investment, people-to-people exchange, and addressing post-war consequences.

“This will open a new chapter in the Vietnam-U.S. relations and create favorable conditions for Vietnam to achieve higher positions in regional and global value chains,” the Vietnamese ambassador shared.

Biden’s visit to Vietnam will mark the first time when a U.S. president pays a visit to the Southeast Asian country at the invitation of a General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Vietnam and the U.S. established diplomatic relations in November 1995, and upgraded their relations to a comprehensive partnership in July 2013.
