Vietnam and Singapore recently discussed a plan whereby Vietnam will export offshore wind power to the island nation, according to the outcomes of talks on Tuesday between Vietnamese Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son and his Singaporean counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan.

The talks were part of Minister Son’s visit to Singapore from Monday to Tuesday this week.

This is the top Vietnamese diplomat’s first official state visit to Singapore since he took office in April 2021, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The two diplomats agreed to have relevant ministries and agencies work together following the outcomes of Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s trip to the city-state in March this year.

Both sides signed a number of cooperation deals during Minister Son’s visit, including a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish the Vietnam - Singapore digital and green economy partnership and a plan on offshore wind energy export.

The two foreign ministers also attended a ceremony on Monday evening to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam - Singapore diplomatic relationship and the 10th anniversary of their strategic partnership.

As for high-level delegation exchange, Minister Son and his Singaporean counterpart agreed to make preparations for upcoming high-level visits, especially Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s Vietnam visit slated for this year.

Both sides also agreed to facilitate negotiations on important cooperation deals in the upcoming period, including a document to upgrade the Vietnam - Singapore Connectivity Framework Agreement, which was signed in 2005.

Regarding regional and international issues of mutual concern, the two top diplomats agreed that the two nations should continue to enhance cooperation, maintain solidarity, and promote the central role of ASEAN.

In addition, they will consider endorsing each other’s candidates to join international and UN agencies, and develop the East Vietnam Sea into a place of peace, cooperation, and development.

Minister Son on Tuesday also met with Singaporean Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean. They agreed to strengthen cooperation and signing of cooperation deals in national defense.

Singapore took the lead in ASEAN and ranked second in the world by foreign direct investment (FDI) in Vietnam.

The island country has poured over US$73 billion of investment money into Vietnam, accounting for some 23 percent of total pledged FDI capital in the latter.
