Choi Joo Ho, general director of Samsung Display Vietnam, and the representatives of some of its vendors are working with National Power Transmission Company (EVNNPT) to discuss the power supply situation coming up to their peak production season.

According to Ho, the operational capacity of several of Samsung’s vendors has been impacted due to erratic power cuts. He added that the period between June and August is peak production time for Samsung’s operations, and therefore, the meeting was to discuss plans to ensure a stable power supply for the group.

Nguyen Duc Thien, general director of EVNNPT, said that hydropower plants contribute 40 per cent of the energy in the north, but the prolonged drought and increased summer demand are exerting great pressure on the industry as water levels in several major dams drop significantly.

“To secure the effectiveness of the national power system, EVNNPT has been forced to implement rotational power cuts. However, the company has done its best to create the most favourable conditions for Samsung and its partners, with only 20 per cent less power available compared to normal,” Thien said.

Thien hopes that Samsung and its vendors can empathise with the power sector and work with them to save electricity.

In a report to the government on June 16, Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) said that the demand for electricity must continue to me strictly manages until there is more water in the lakes to supply the hydroelectricity plants. The expected power cut in the north this week will be 2,000-2,500MW. However, this level is about 20-30 per cent lower than the average reduction in capacity seen in the early days of June and half of the reduction of the highest day of 5,000MW.
