The 2022 import-export report released by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) in late April showed that Vietnam produced 210.5 million mobile phones last year, a 9.1 percent decrease compared with 2021.

The value of mobile phone parts was VND663.7 trillion, up by 15.1 percent.

Thai Nguyen and Bac Ninh were the biggest mobile phone production bases in Vietnam with production capacity higher in Thai Nguyen.  There were 65 million smartphones priced below VND3 million, of which 49 million were from Thai Nguyen and 16 million from Bac Ninh.

As many as 37 million products had prices from VND3 million to VND6 million, of which 25.8 million came from Thai Nguyen and 11.8 million from Bac Ninh.

As for smartphones priced at VND6-10 million, there were 34.7 million products, including 27.4 million produced in Thai Nguyen and 7.3 million in Bac Ninh. Meanwhile, high-end smartphones, valued at over VND10 million, mostly came from Bac Nninh (7.601 million).

In 2022, Vietnam’s phone and phone accessory export turnover reached approximately $58 billion, up 0.81 percent over 2021, accounting for 15.62 percent of total import and export turnover of the whole country. Of this, turnover from foreign invested enterprises (FIEs) was $57.8 billion, up 1.35 percent over the year before, accounting for 99.67 percent of export turnover of the products.

The export turnover of complete built units (CBU) reached $33.32 billion, up 0.67 percent over 2021, or 57.4 percent of export value of the products. This included $31.42 billion worth of Samsung phones, which accounted for 95 percent of total CBU phone export turnover in the country.

The major export markets for phones and phone accessories were China, the US, EU, South Korea, UAE and Hong Kong (China).

China was the largest export market for Vietnam, with $16.3 billion in 2022, up 7.1 percent over 2021. The US ranked second with $11.9 billion, up 22.5 percent, or 20.5 percent of total export turnover.

The EU followed with $6.5 billion, down 15.7 percent, accounting for 11.2 percent of total export turnover. South Korea ranked fourth with $5.05 billion, up 5.3 percent.

In 2022, phones and phone accessories ranked first among Vietnam’s top export items. However, its export turnover grew only 0.8 percent over 2021.
